Dress Up Tips For Men

ByMichael D Taylor

The society we live in is generally a casual one. A trip to a bookstore or grocery store on a Saturday afternoon may reveal many of us dressed in a baseball cap, tee shirt, sweatpants, and athletic sneakers. But you know what? It takes just as much effort to throw on these items of clothing as it does to put on a trilby hat, a cotton sweater, a pair of jeans, and an oxford shoe. The first outfit looks sloppy and messy, whereas the latter outfit contains the same number of pieces, requires no ironing, and conveys a much more polished and put together image. It is dressed up without being formal. There are easy ways to dress up your everyday outfits without having to invest in a whole new wardrobe.

If your natural inclination is to just put on jeans, a silk screened tee shirt, and a pair of sneakers for a date or a day of running errands, take a moment to examine how you can easily dress up this look. First, layers automatically add luxury and interest to an outfit. Try layering a button down shirt under your silk screened tee shirt, and leave the collar exposed. For another layer, add either a vest or sport jacket on top. Keep the jeans, but make sure to add a belt. Trade our your athletic sneakers for a pair of boots, fashion sneakers, or leather oxfords. Simple. And you have just taken your look from blah to dressy casual that easily.

Another easy dress up tip is to upgrade your hat wardrobe. Despite the popularity of the baseball cap, it really should not have place in a man's wardrobe, other than for sports events. So relegate your baseball caps to this purpose, and for daily use instead reach for more fashionable hats. Trilby hats, fedoras and newsboy caps are all great options.

Don't be hesitant to incorporate pieces of your wardrobe that you normally see as "dress up pieces" into your daily apparel selection. For example, pieces of a suit that you might normally only wear to an interview can be worn to the movies, on a date, or to work in a business casual environment. A pair of pants from a navy suit can be paired with a camel colored sweater and a brown leather shoe. Or, the navy suit jacket can be paired with a white and blue pin stripe shirt and a pair of brown wool dress pants.

If you are dressing up for a formal event, remember that tradition usually rules here. Despite our largely casual society, it is not appropriate to dress "down" for a wedding or an event that indicates "semi-formal attire." Although "semi-formal" has a broad definition, you can still think of it as meaning that a suit is appropriate. For a day event, you may wish to wear a suit in a light color, such as camel or light gray, or a suit in a fashionable pattern such as twill or a pinstripe. In the evening, a darker colored suit, such as charcoal, navy, or black is appropriate. Remember that in all cases, there is nothing wrong with being the best dressed person in the room. A suit is the paragon of a man's wardrobe, and is rarely inappropriate at an event that requires you to dress up.
