Having a daughter is a blast, and I love being able to help her figure out her unique personality. However, it's also a challenge, as I want her to be able to creatively express herself, but do not want to spend endless amounts of money trying to dress her in the latest trends that she's interested in. Being able to find a blend of clothes that she will enjoy wearing and that I can afford is important, so I have found a few ways to get her what she likes while still putting money in my savings account.
1. Buy children's clothing with a little bit of room for growth.
If your daughter is younger, she's going to grow out of her clothes quickly. It's important to have clothing that she's going to be able to wear for a little longer. Buy shirts with sleeves that are a little longer than your daughter would normally wear and pants that can be hemmed up until your daughter grows into them. This can add months to your daughter's clothes.
2. Purchase mix-and-match pieces.
Girl's clothing has the added benefit of being able to mix and match easily. If your daughter doesn't like to wear the same outfit multiple times in a week, you can add variety to her wardrobe by mixing staple pieces in different but complementary colors. For example, a bright blue skirt can be worn with a white sweater one day and with a pink top two days after. Every style can be combined in this manner; preppy clothing, retro clothing and rock clothing can be easily blended into a unique style.
3. Have fun with accessories.
The best way to let your daughter unleash her personality through her clothing is by letting her have fun with accessories. These are the least expensive items to purchase in a wardrobe, and if they are lost or stolen, they can be easily replaced. Instead of purchasing trendy tops, pants and skirts, stick to colorful staples that are durable and have your daughter pick out the accessories that she likes. This allows you to blend your budget with your daughter's fashion sense.
As your daughter ages, have her begin saving her allowance and use it on her clothing if she wants something that you were not planning to purchase. This will allow her to learn how to work with her money to dress the way that she loves.
